MS Admissions Statistics

Main content start

The admissions committee compares applications to our department based on academic preparation, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and work experience (if any). We carefully choose our admitted applicants based on the above criteria, and we review our decisions to ensure broad diversity of background and experience in our student population.

The following data represents the academic profile of admitted students. These numbers are not the sole basis of our admissions process. Our diverse student body includes over 200 students from around the world, each with unique qualities that enrich our community.

NOTE: This data is based on the average of external applicants as well as current Stanford graduate students in other departments, but does not include coterminal (i.e. current Stanford undergraduate) applicants.

We are working to finalize the numbers from 2021, but wanted to immediately provide the information on the admission rate before applications are submitted.  The decrease in the percentage admitted is due to an increase in the number of applications received.
