The Master of Science in Management Science and Engineering prepares students for a lifelong career addressing the technical and managerial needs of private and public organizations. The MS program emphasizes developing analytic abilities, making better decisions, and developing and executing strategies while also leading people who innovate. Unlike an MBA, the department's master’s program addresses the technical as well as the behavioral challenges of running organizations and complex systems, emphasizing quantitative analytic skills and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Eligibility & application process

Degree Level

  • Applicant must hold an engineering degree, or a related quantitative degree (major or minor) that includes differential calculus of several variables and linear algebra.
  • Applicants from institutions outside the U.S. must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association.

Background Requirements

  • Applicants are expected to have completed both MATH 51 Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, and Modern Applications, or an equivalent multivariable differential calculus and linear algebra course(s), and CS 106A Programming Methodology, or an equivalent general programming course, before beginning graduate study. 
  • Additional course work in general programming, statistics, and economics is preferred.
  • Work experience is not necessary to apply.
