We hit a few highlights in this issue with profiles on a talented new faculty member, a legendary professor emeritus and Nobel prize winner, opportunities for MS&E alumni in venture capital and more. MS&E's Kenneth Arrow Named a Stanford Engineering Hero as Operations Research Pioneer

Kenneth Arrow was 51 years old when he shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in Economics and became the youngest person to receive that award, a distinction he retains to this day. Considered one of the 20th century’s most influential economists, he pioneered theories underlying assessment of business risk, and government economic and welfare policies. Arrow was also an influential teacher who helped five of his former students go on to win their own Nobel Prizes. Read more…

New Faculty Profile: Melissa Valentine Is Unlocking the Secrets to Effective Teams

Professor Melissa Valentine joined the MS&E faculty in 2013 to specialize in organizational effectiveness, with an emphasis on high-stress environments. A fateful hospital internship led her to study the impact of teamwork on quality of care and what effective teams do differently. Read more...

Out of the Lab, Into the World: Accel Innovation Scholars

Accel Partners has teamed with the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) in the School of Engineering’s Department of Management Science & Engineering to launch the Accel Innovation Scholars (AIS) program – a yearlong experience for 12 Stanford engineering Ph.D. students. Read more…

MS&E Career Corner: Opportunities In Venture Capital

Two different crowds literally feasted on career advice from venture capitalists at lunch and dinner events on April 28. A "Women in Venture" luncheon featured five women in senior venture capital positions who advised that there is definitely room at the top for more women. That evening, the “Venture Capital as a Career” panel discussion and networking dinner for students and alumni highlighted three MS&E alumni in prestigious venture capital positions who offered frank insights and advice.
